Call for action – Purchase Commitment

Letter to governments to consider the purchase of Canadian-made protective products.

SAINT-HYACINTHE, March 26, 2020 – The Canadian Textile Industry Association (CTIA) and its members wish to remind the Canadian government of the crucial role we can play for Canadian society in the face of the COVID-2019 pandemic.

Canada is currently facing urgent needs for medical products such as protective masks and various protective clothing for health care workers and first responders as well as for filtration and packaging products.

Most of these products are now manufactured abroad. This is because the federal government has opened its market to foreign countries over the past decade without considering the importance of being strategically supplied by Canadian companies.

At this critical time for Canada, we want to confirm that we are able to quickly produce and deliver specialty medical and filtration textiles.

Today we want to let you know that many of our members are working on modifying their equipment to provide medical and other products that Canada urgently needs.

CTIA and its members are committed to producing them quickly. Our members are firmly committed to bringing their expertise and capabilities to support Canada in its fight against COVID-19.

We therefore look forward to a firm decision from the Canadian government to purchase Canadian products.

WE ARE READY to work for the health and protection of Canadians.

Many Canadian textile industries and their facilities are already considered "essential" to react quickly to COVID-19. Canadian textile companies must be selected as "strategic and priority suppliers" in future government calls for proposals.

In addition, the CTIA is available at your convenience to discuss the importance of being self-sufficient in strategic textile products in the future as well as capacities of our members to support Canada in its fight against COVID-19.

The Canadian textile industry more than ever is serving Canadians.
